On Monday, during our staff in-service day, Maggie Peters and Stephanie Silvia led an art lesson inspired by Achviivkaam tu’ipak (Condor Returns) by artist Lyn Risling, a member of the Karuk, Yurok, and Hupa Tribes.
This training was part of Fostering Culturally Sustaining PBIS: Insights from Northern California Native American Communities with Maggie Peters.
Through this lesson, staff learned and explored how art reflects cultural traditions, relationships to the land, and the values of Native communities in Northwestern California.
Achviivkaam tu’ipak highlights the California condor, a species once nearly extinct that is once again soaring thanks to the Yurok Tribe’s ongoing restoration efforts.
